Question:

Can you point me to any guidelines on peanut irrigation? I have a grower who wants to do it but is concerned about extreme effects.

Jordan Answer:

I will search, but in general we benefit from one inch per week but little value above two inches. This could be rain or irrigation. Depending on soil characteristics rain or irrigation can really create a great environment for effective digging if we hit a dry spell.

Question:

What about time of day to irrigate? Should one worry about mid-day applications?

Jordan Answer:

I would think mid-day is best. We know cotton can have issues with early morning irrigation (cool that affects flowering.). The more the foliage dries before dark the better from a disease standpoint.

Information from UGA:

Jordan: Based on this information (for runners) the suggestion is to irrigate at lower rates later in the season if you are using center pivot and have been doing a good job throughout the season. As we move close to harvest the amount needed is considerably lower than June, July, and August (depending on planting date.)  Based on what I have found reduce the irrigation rate in the last month by half. Note the water use curve in the final link below.

Several years ago we had an irrigation study at Lewiston-Woodville and we were heavy-handed in September and observed a yield reduction from too much water with cooler nights.
